What is the heart of your Substack, and what do you hope readers experience when What is the heart of your Substack, and what do you hope readers experience when they spend time there?
There is no doubt that times are hard.
The antidote, at least for me: hope, compassion, connection, courage, and knowledge—all while working for meaningful change. I wholeheartedly believe in the power of people working together for good and the importance of connection and compassion. Together, we can make a difference.
One of my mantras: “Hope is a renewable energy source.” Furthermore, hope is a prerequisite for positive change.
My Substack capitalizes on my background as a psychologist with 30+ years of experience working with trauma survivors. This is uniquely paired with my martial arts background (5th-degree black belt). Over 20 years ago, I co-founded a non-profit that integrates advances in trauma research with movement-based approaches to foster violence prevention and trauma recovery. This has been incredibly inspiring and meaningful work.
I bring passion for all of these topics to my posts.
My writing leans towards a conversational, informal style. I welcome comments, questions, and suggestions. I’d like it to feel like you are talking with a friend. Because you are!
What inspired you to begin writing or creating on Substack?
As a child, I found that reading and writing were lifelines, helping me cope with everyday stress.
In 2025, I began a desired career transition. That, paired with current events, prompted me to start writing on Substack and to revive that legacy coping strategy.
My initial goal was modest: to connect with and bring hope to just one person. In the end, I have made many wonderful connections and enjoy learning about a wide range of topics from so many talented writers here on Substack.
Is there a topic, question, or idea that continually calls you back in your work? If so, what is it, and why does it matter to you?
That is a tough one.
Trauma, resilience, healing, empowerment, safety, and well being are common themes. I also share information on violence prevention strategies. These topics relate to my life’s work, and I remain incredibly passionate about each of them.
Lastly, humor—and animals—have saved me from many dark times. I try to bring lightness to my writings when possible, while maintaining respect for the topic under discussion. And I frequently share photos of my adorable cats or other animals I find along the way.
If your writing or creative work could make one meaningful difference in someone’s life, what would you hope that difference would be?
That is an easy one!
Quite simply, I want readers to know this:
YOU ARE NOT ALONE. You matter. Your experiences matter.
Healing is possible.
And…I’m listening.
Is there a favorite photo you would like to share with readers? It could be a photo of yourself, a place you love, something you’ve created, or anything meaningful to you. Please tell us a little about why you chose it.
It was hard to choose, as I have thousands of photos that I love! This photo was taken on an ordinary summer day, after spending time with friends. My husband and I wandered over to watch the sunset, and a friend captured this peaceful and gorgeous scene. Lake Champlain is simply beautiful.
A second favorite is below. I call this “Turtle Parade”. We see this all the time on the Lamoille River in VT, yet it never ceases to make me smile.
What is something that brings you joy or peace in your everyday life outside of writing?
Three things immediately come to mind:
Movement is my medicine. I run, practice karate, weight train, bike, walk, kayak, play pickleball—you get the idea!
Nature. I simply love being out in nature.
Connecting with trusted friends.
Anything else you’d like readers to know?
I love to collaborate on topics of mutual interest. I welcome ideas or suggestions for future posts as well.
