What About Us?

When the Children Speak

Adults thought
Flying to the moon
was a grand idea

And building roads,
and bridges,
and dams
would keep us connected forever

And houses
and neighborhoods
offered warmth
and security

We learned how to manage crops
and feed the people

And before we knew it,
the world was thriving—
beyond
our wildest imaginations

And then it happened...

Someone wanted more
and then others...

More money,
more houses,
more land—
more EVERYTHING!

And people everywhere
began to worry—
that there would not be enough

To take care of the sick
and the elderly,
and all the people
who could not take care of themselves

Some people held signs
and tried as hard as they could
to remind others—

That taking care of one another
is always the best answer

And listening
is how things get done

But no matter how hard they tried,
it felt as though
no one was paying attention

And then it happened...

Children all over the world
began making posters

That carried messages of—

Love
Trust
Unity
Kindness
Compassion
Peace

And one message
was written
over and over again:

WHAT ABOUT US?
